How Authors Make Money from Book Publishing

To be successful as a writer, it's vital to know how writers can make money by publishing books. Currently, there are numerous ways for authors to generate revenue from their BOOK besides simply selling the BOOK, but with a solid business model, they can build various streams of income through several types of royalties and public speaking engagements that consistently give them a steady stream of corporate and other private speaking engagements as a way of making money.

1. Book Sales and Royalties

The author’s primary source of income is the royalties earned after the sale of each BOOK. An author earns a percentage of the sale price of each BOOK purchased; the exact percentage is listed in the author’s monthly statement and reflects their earnings from book sales. Self-published authors can earn anywhere from 5% to 15% on sales of products sold through the traditional publisher, while some do earn as much as 70% on sales made through certain websites.

If the author sells numerous copies of their BOOK, they will also receive numerous royalties.

2. Advances from Publishers

Aside from the traditional publishing process, authors may also be able to request a payment (advance) on royalties paid prior to the sale of the author’s BOOK. The publisher will pay the author an advance on any BOOK before royalties are paid after the sale; the author is responsible for the advance through the royalties from the sale of their BOOK. Authoring a BOOK gives an author earnings prior to the publication and when it sells.

3. Multiple Formats Increase Earnings

The author's source of revenue is not limited to paperback copies alone. An author has the ability to publish authors' editions in an e-book format, hardcover, audiobook, or large format with a larger print size. With the usage of audiobooks and newer technologies, there are more avenues for authors' sources of revenue because there has been a growing number of readers using audiobooks who are busy with their day-to-day lives.

4. Speaking Engagements and Workshops

Many authors find additional revenue by speaking at colleges, corporations, or literary events after having established their credibility with readers through publishing their books. When there is a readership established for one or more of an author's books, selling author appearance fee opportunities can be a great source of revenue for the author and his/her publishing work.

5. Courses, Coaching, and Memberships

Many authors will monetize their expertise by creating an online course or coaching program that may be individually paid for. These products help an author to establish a recurring source of revenue from his/her work and will support the establishment of the author's name brand.

6. Freelance Writing and Content Creation

Books are a way for an author to be provided with ways to establish a paid source of income through different types of writing such as writing blogs, writing ghostwritten books, copywriting, and/or writing media/press. These types of writing provide long-term revenue opportunities for the author, especially with nonfiction authors and subject matter experts.

7. Rights Licensing and Translations

By selling translation rights, audiobooks and/or films and adaptations, you can greatly enhance your earnings. Licensing gives authors the opportunity to apply for licensing without actually having to sell their book. Authors have now created even more options regarding how they generate income.

Conclusion

Understanding how authors generate revenue will give you valuable insight into what options are available for generating your own revenue. Successful authors usually generate multiple revenue streams by combining royalties, services, digital products, and/license rights. With careful planning, and consistent marketing, book publishing can be a solid and scalable way of generating a financial return for an author.
