What Is an ISBN and Why You Need It (Complete Guide for Authors)

Published by: **Yuvraj Singh** | On: **December 15, 2025**

Whether you’re releasing your book through traditional means or self-publishing, the abbreviation of ISBN is one that you will hear a lot about from other publishers, authors, and experts in the industry.

For many authors (especially when they are first getting started), ISBNs may seem confusing, but understanding what this means is essential to both the success and the identity of your book.

What Is the Full Form of ISBN?

ISBN refers to the International Standard Book Number. It provides individual identification for your book with a single 13-digit number. An ISBN is issuing an Aadhaar card for your book; each ISBN will be only used once.

With an ISBN, you can identify the following for your book:

-> Who’s the publisher

-> Which edition

-> What format (eBook, paperback, hardcover)

-> Where it’s catalogued

ISBN numbers allow libraries, bookstores, distributors, and various online sites (like Amazon) to operate correctly.

Why Is an ISBN Important? (And Why You Must Have One)

Some fledgling authors think that ISBN numbers are optional; however, this is not the case.

Here are some reasons why it is important for you to have an ISBN:

1. It Makes Your Book Officially Part of the Global Publishing System

When you do not have an ISBN, your book will not be recognized by the global publishing network as part of that network. Therefore, it will be very difficult for retailers and libraries to locate, identify, and list your book.

2. Retailers and Distributors Require ISBNs

Retailers (both online – such as Amazon, Flipkart – and brick-and-mortar bookstores) and distribution channels will require you to obtain an ISBN number before they can add your book to their inventory.

3. It Protects Your Book’s Unique Identity

The ISBN ensures that your book cannot be confused with another book, even if the titles are nearly identical.

4. Aids in Finding Your Book All Over the World

When you obtain an ISBN, your book will become part of various catalog systems (such as Bowker, Google Books, and library networks) that list books from around the world.

5. A Separate ISBN is Required for Each Format of Your Book

An ISBN is required for each format of your book, including:

-> eBooks

-> Paperback editions

-> Hardcover editions

-> Audiobooks

This allows retailers to track inventory and sales for each individual format of your book separately.

Where Do You Find the ISBN in a Book?

ISBN Numbers (ISBNs) can be in a published book in 2 places:

1) The back cover under the Barcode

2) The Copyright/Imprint Page within the Book

The ISBN allows retail locations and libraries to easily scan Books for both Sale and Stock.

How to Get an ISBN Number (Step-by-Step Guide)

In India, the process is straightforward and there’s no Charge. All ISBNs in India are provided by the Raja Ram Mohan Roy National Agency for ISBN under the Ministry of Education.

Step 1: Go to the official website.

From the ISBN Agency’s Home Page, create an account.

Step 2: Select the type of ISBN

-> Single ISBNs for individual Books

-> Bulk ISBNs for Publishers.

Step 3: Upload required documents.

You need:

-> A sample of your Manuscript or your Cover Page

-> Your Author Information

-> Your Book Title and Category

-> Your Publisher Information

Step 4: Submit your application.

Once you’ve uploaded all of your documents, click submit to submit your application.

Step 5: Wait to receive Approval.

Typically, you’ll receive Approval from the Agency 7-15 Days after submitting your application, but it could take longer based on the volume of Applications currently being processed.

Once you receive Approval, you’ll receive your ISBN Number via e-mail.

ISBN Cost - Is There a Fee?

For many authors, it is a misconception that ISBNs come with a cost.

The reality is that:

ISBNs in the country of India are free.

The Indian government supplies ISBNs at no cost to the publisher.

This is an advantage that Indian Authors have over their Global counterparts.

Why do some companies charge ISBNs?

While ISBN's may be included in the service packages offered by publishing houses or self-publishing companies. The fees charged by these companies are the fees for the service and not for the ISBN itself.

When applying for an ISBN through the government portal, the cost of an ISBN is zero.

Difference Between ISSN and ISBN

Many new authors confuse the two; however, they are two separate items.

ISBN (International Standard Book Number)

-> Identifies books

-> Identifies one book/edition.

-> 13-digit number

-> Required to publish and sell books.

ISSN (International Standard Serial Number)

-> Identifies Serial Publications,

-> I.e. Journal/Magazine/Newspaper.

-> 8-digit number

-> Required to publish Academic Journals.

In simple words:

-> Books - ISBN

-> Magazines/Journals - ISSN

Do You Need an ISBN for Self-Publishing?

Yes! If your goal is to:

-> sell your book through Amazon

-> have it available in bookshops

-> ship your book out to libraries,

-> establish yourself as a recognized author with professional credibility.

If a book does not carry an ISBN, it will be considered a personal or unofficial piece of work.

Do All Books Need an ISBN?

Not necessarily.

Books published as:

-> personal prints (family and/or friends)

-> Gifts.

If you want to sell your book, it is a good idea to obtain an ISBN.

Final Thoughts: Why ISBN Matters for Every Author
