Researchers have been trying to find out since a long time about the relationship between periodontitis and systemic disease. Periodontal infection may act as a source of infection for systemic disease. This area of research which relates periodontal diseases to systemic diseases is known as Periodontal Medicine. With strong evidence connecting periodontal health to systemic diseases like atherosclerosis,, diabetes mellitus, and respiratory disease, premature delivery of infants, this theory has evolved.
