Youth are the connectors between ethnicity of different generations and also the torchbearers of the future; which makes their active engagement a ‘crucial component’ for achieving a sustainable society. As societies evolve in response to environmental, economic, and social alterations, the role of young people as innovators and changemakers becomes ever more significant. Their abilities; updated intellect and perspectives; energy; and commitment to collectively seen dreams of ‘Justice’ and ‘Equity’ hold the potential to drive transformative solutions that align with the ideals of a welfare oriented society. The United Nation’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) serve as a comprehensive roadmap to address the interconnected global challenges of poverty, inequality, climate change, and more. Among these, the participation of youth hs been recognized as a pivotal force in to realise and achieve these goals; more particularly in areas like Quality Education (Goal 4); Gender Equality (Goal 5); Decent Work and Economic Growth (Goal 8); and Climate Action (Goal 13). By fostering inclusivity, innovation, and collaboration, young people showcase the capacity to reshape policies, redefine societal values, and create a more resilient and equitable world. We expect so much from ‘Youth’ but need to understand them more firstly.

The present book, entitled, ‘Sustainable Development of Youth: Discourses on Institutional Patterns and Practices’, explores the multi-dimensional relationship between young people and sustainability through a series of thought-provoking ideas related to paterns and practoces followed in different institutions in which they dwell. It examines key themes such as the role of education in shaping youth personality and opportunities for marginalized groups, and how inclusive frameworks can nurture a more equitable society. It also addresses pressing social issues, including the impact of domestic violence on adolescents, the effectiveness of legal protections like POCSO, and the complex interplay between socio-cultural norms and government schemes around menstrual health. Further, the book sheds light on critical environmental and social concerns, such as the implications of the Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act, 2023, and the potential of youth activism in driving policy reforms. The chapters also delve into emerging societal trends, from the radicalization of youth in the digital age to the psychological consequences of beauty standards and stereotypes. Through this diverse range of topics, the book captures the intersectionality of sustainability, legal frameworks, and youth empowerment.

At its core, the Editors have tried to illuminate the hopes, struggles, and resilience of young people in India, acknowledging them as both victims and change-makers within broader socio-political and environmental contexts. By addressing topics such as inclusivity, empowerment, mental health, and community welfare, this book aims to inspire further research, dialogue, and actionable solutions to create a future that is equitable, inclusive, and sustainable. As we navigate through the chapters, readers are invited to critically reflect on the transformative potential of the youth and the systemic challenges that need to be overcome to ensure their active participation in sustainable progress. Through a combination of empirical studies, theoretical insights, and policy discussions, this book hopes to serve as a valuable resource for students, researchers, policymakers, and anyone committed to understanding and amplifying the role of youth in shaping a sustainable tomorrow.
