The rapid advancement of neuroscience has significantly enhanced the understanding of brain structure, function, and pathology; however, there remains a growing need to integrate these developments with holistic medical systems that emphasize individualized care and mind–body harmony. Ayurveda, one of the world’s oldest systems of medicine, offers a rich conceptual framework describing cognition, behavior, consciousness, and neurological dysfunction through constructs such as Manas, Majja Dhatu, Indriya, Dosha, and Ojas. This book is conceived as an interdisciplinary scholarly effort to bridge classical Ayurvedic wisdom with contemporary neuroscientific knowledge, thereby creating a comprehensive and integrative understanding of neurological health and disease.
The primary aim of this book is to reinterpret Ayurvedic descriptions of the nervous system in the context of modern neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neurochemistry, and neuropharmacology. By correlating traditional textual references with current scientific models, the text seeks to decode ancient observations using evidence-based reasoning and modern biomedical language. This integrative approach not only enhances conceptual clarity but also facilitates meaningful dialogue between traditional medicine and modern neuroscience.
The scope of the book extends to a detailed examination of major neurodegenerative, neuropsychiatric, and neuroinflammatory disorders from an integrative perspective. Classical Ayurvedic disease entities are systematically aligned with contemporary neurological diagnoses to highlight similarities, differences, and complementary insights. Special emphasis is placed on understanding disease pathogenesis, progression, and therapeutic targets through both Ayurvedic principles and modern neuroscientific frameworks.
In addition, the book critically evaluates Ayurvedic therapeutic modalities—including Rasayana and Medhya interventions, Panchakarma therapies, yoga, meditation, and polyherbal formulations—using modern translational research methodologies. Emerging scientific tools such as phytochemistry, molecular docking, biomarkers, neuroimaging, and clinical studies are incorporated to elucidate mechanisms of action, neuroprotective effects, and therapeutic potential. This translational focus aims to strengthen the scientific validation of traditional interventions and encourage innovation in neuropharmacological drug discovery.
Designed for postgraduate students, researchers, clinicians, and academicians in Ayurveda, neuroscience, pharmacology, and integrative medicine, this book aspires to serve as both an educational resource and a research reference. By fostering integrative thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration, the text ultimately seeks to contribute to a holistic, systems-based understanding of the brain–mind continuum and to support the development of safe, effective, and evidence-based strategies for neurological care.
