Diabetes and Organ Cross Talk

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most prevalent chronic metabolic disorders worldwide and represents a major challenge to global health. Traditionally, diabetes has been viewed mainly as a disorder of glucose metabolism resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. However, advances in modern biomedical research have expanded this understanding, revealing that diabetes is not confined to the pancreas alone but involves complex interactions among multiple organs and regulatory systems within the body.

The concept of organ cross talk has emerged as an important framework for understanding the systemic nature of diabetes. Organs such as the pancreas, liver, skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, brain, kidneys, heart, and gastrointestinal tract communicate continuously through hormonal signals, neural pathways, inflammatory mediators, and metabolic molecules to maintain metabolic balance. In diabetes, this communication network becomes disrupted, leading to insulin resistance, impaired insulin secretion, chronic inflammation, and progressive organ dysfunction.

This book, Diabetes and Organ Cross Talk, aims to provide an integrated understanding of how different organs interact in regulating metabolism and how disturbances in these interactions contribute to the development and progression of diabetes. The chapters discuss key mechanisms including molecular signaling pathways, inflammation, oxidative stress, gut microbiota, and important organ axes such as brain–pancreas, cardiorenal, and liver–pancreas interactions. It is hoped that this work will help medical students, clinicians, and researchers better understand the systemic nature of diabetes and encourage further research in this evolving field of metabolic science.
