The present volume, Handbook on Social Service Organization and Management, has been conceived as a comprehensive and accessible guide for students, entrant practitioners, and scholars engaged in the field of social work and social service administration. The inspiration for this book arises from the growing need to understand the dynamic role of Social Service Organizations (SSOs) in addressing complex social issues and fostering inclusive development in contemporary society.
In recent decades, societies across the globe—and particularly in India—have undergone significant socio-economic transformations. These changes have brought both opportunities and challenges, including poverty, inequality, gender disparities, and issues of governance and sustainability. In this context, Social Service Organizations have emerged as vital institutions that bridge the gap between state mechanisms and community needs. They function not only as service providers but also as agents of social change, advocacy, and empowerment. This book seeks to provide a structured understanding of these organizations, their functioning, and their evolving significance.
This handbook is designed to serve as a practical and academic resource. It introduces readers to the foundational concepts of social service organizations, including their meaning, objectives, functions, and importance in modern society. It further explores organizational structures, management principles, and the role of NGOs in development, particularly within the Indian context. Special attention has been given to contemporary issues, legislative frameworks, and governance mechanisms, enabling readers to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world applications.
One of the distinguishing features of this book is its interdisciplinary approach. Drawing from sociology, social work, public administration, and development studies, the content integrates theoretical perspectives such as functionalism, conflict theory, and systems theory. These frameworks help in understanding the broader societal role of SSOs, as reflected in discussions throughout the chapters (see introductory concepts in Chapter 1 of the book). Additionally, emerging models such as Self-Help Groups (SHGs), women empowerment collectives, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives are examined to highlight innovative approaches to social development.
The book has been structured in a systematic manner to facilitate easy comprehension. Each chapter builds upon the previous one, guiding the reader from basic concepts to more advanced discussions on policy, governance, and future trends. Efforts have been made to present the material in a clear, concise, and student-friendly language while maintaining academic rigor. It is my hope that this format will support learners in their academic pursuits and also assist practitioners in enhancing their professional competencies.
While preparing this book, I have drawn upon my academic experience, field observations, and interaction with students and professionals in the domain of Sociology/Social Work/Social Service Organizations. Every attempt has been made to ensure that the content is original, relevant, and reflective of current realities. However, I acknowledge that the field of social service is vast and ever-evolving, and there is always scope for further enrichment.
I sincerely hope that this handbook will serve as a valuable resource for understanding the principles and practices of Social Service Organization and Management. It is intended not only to inform but also to inspire readers to contribute meaningfully to the development of a more just, equitable, and compassionate society.
