The purpose of compiling this book entitled “Understanding Dynamics of Man–Animal Conflict in Kashmir” is to offer a comprehensive, field-based, and scientifically informed account of the complex and increasing interactions between humans and wildlife in the Kashmir Valley from a veterinarian’s perspective. The book systematically presents statistical data on man–animal conflict incidents across districts, identifies major conflict hotspots, and traces the historical pattern of such encounters in the region. It examines the components and factors that lead to human–wildlife conflict, including ecological changes, habitat disturbance, and the resurgence of wild animals outside their natural habitats. A significant focus is placed on the identification of wild animals during conflict situations and on addressing emergencies involving injured, trapped, or distressed wildlife through appropriate veterinary and rescue management. The work also discusses mitigation measures, advisories, and practical instructions to be followed during conflict situations, along with the measures adopted by the Department to control and manage such incidents. It explains the framework for compensation to victims, highlights strategies for effective mitigation and long-term management, and emphasizes coordinated action between veterinary professionals, wildlife authorities, and local communities. By integrating data, field experience, veterinary science, and wildlife management practices, the book aims to serve as a practical guide for officials, veterinarians, students, policymakers, and community responders engaged in managing human–wildlife conflict in Kashmir. This book on man–animal conflict in Kashmir is important because it brings together scattered data, field experiences, departmental practices, and scientific knowledge into a single, accessible resource for those who must respond to conflict situations in real time. In a region where human settlements increasingly intersect with wildlife habitats, such a concise yet comprehensive guide enables veterinarians, wildlife officials, field staff, students, and community responders to quickly understand conflict patterns, identify species accurately, follow advisories, and apply appropriate mitigation and emergency management measures. By presenting practical insights alongside statistical trends and institutional responses, the book promotes informed decision-making, coordinated action, and humane handling of both human and animal interests. Ultimately, it serves as a ready reference that strengthens preparedness, supports policy and training, and contributes to more effective and sustainable management of man–animal conflict in Kashmir.
