Vocational Education and Employability in 21st Century.

The 21st century has rapidly transformed the relationship between education, work, and livelihood. The nature of employment has been radically altered by rapid technological progress, particularly in artificial intelligence, automation and digital platforms, as well as global economic integration and environmental transitions. In this way, traditional academic credentials alone are no longer enough to prepare employees for the workforce. Rather, employability is increasingly shaped by a dynamic combination of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, adaptability, digital fluency and the capacity to life long learning.

In this context, vocational education has developed not as an alternative track but as a core component of sustainable development and inclusive growth. In recognition of this paradigm shift, the book "Vocational Education and Employability in the 21st Century" aims to critically interrogate the changing interface between skill formation, industry demands, institutional frameworks and individual career trajectories. The volume draws on interdisciplinary perspectives from education, economics, library science, social work, computer science and policy studies to provide a comprehensive analysis of the transformative potential of vocational education.

The book comprises ten interconnected chapters. The first chapters discuss core topics, i.e. AI-mediated communication and the ongoing importance of human soft skills, and then offer a fresh look at libraries as underutilized knowledge infrastructures in skill ecosystems. In the following chapters, the Indian skill ecosystem is analysed in detailed, historical context, structural opportunities and persistent challenges are discussed. Teacher training and capacity building are examined in detail as critical enablers of vocational integration. The volume also discusses industry-academia collaboration models, the role of vocational education in promoting employment and self-employment, and global perspectives on skill development. The following chapters provide in-depth studies on green skills and sustainable livelihoods in the ecologically sensitive state of Uttarakhand, entrepreneurship, start-up competencies and the foundational role of vocational training in nurturing job creators rather than job seekers.

Every chapter is firmly anchored in rigorous scholarship and draws on national policy frameworks, especially the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) and international best practices and empirical evidence from the developing economy context. The contributing authors have striven to achieve a balance between conceptual depth and practical applicability, offering action-oriented insights to educators, policymakers, training providers, industry partners and learners alike.

We recognize that the conversation regarding vocational education is by its nature fluid. While this book offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary exploration of vocational education and employability in the 21st century, the rapidly evolving nature of technology- particularly artificial intelligence, automation, and digital platforms, means that some insights may quickly become dated as new innovations reshape the industrial workforce. Its purpose is rather to encourage informed discussion, evidence-based policy and institutional innovation. We sincerely hope this work will make a meaningful contribution to the ongoing national endeavour of building a skilled, resilient and future-ready workforce, one that can leverage India’s demographic dividend while advancing the broader goals of sustainable development, social equity and economic prosperity.
