The booming Indian economy is inflowing huge investment in the Hospital &Healthcare sector. The development of new multi-specialty hospitals are providing platform for these companies to flourish. The patients have more choices now and they demand something more than just good treatment, medical service, and competitive prices and much more. So the concept of Hospital & Health caring is changing to cater all types of changing demands.

This is putting more pressure on companies to make sure they are ready for the challenges to survive in this competitive business.

Hospital & Healthcare business in India is a fast paced business and one of the pressures on companies is to train and develop employees and employ methods to retain the skill sets required to have a competitive edge over competitors. The training and development initiative by the surveyed sample hospital & healthcare companies gave a mixed response; some hospital & healthcare companies were really good in investing in people. These hospital & healthcare companies are large organizations with large no. of employees and have good reputation for investing in their employees. The survey from employees of these hospital & healthcare organizations suggested that the support from company regarding training and development is huge and they have dedicated departments to create learning organizations. The human resource department in the company is a strategic department. They emphasized that one of the major reason they have significant market share in Indian Hospital & Healthcare is due to well-trained and developed work force. The employees of these companies also reflected the same view that their company is investing in people; majority of them said that their hospital & healthcare company is a learning organization but also said that consistency across the board is lacking.

Employees felt that there are plenty of promises for training and progression but sometimes companies are not able to deliver what they are boasting for. Productivity upgrade was boasted by majority of employees in these hospital & healthcare companies; they also said that training and development opportunities helped them to be more motivated and to do the job effectively. Time and labour turnover were the v major constraints in effective implementation of training and development opportunities.

These companies are renowned and have wide presence in Indian market. But these companies showed very minimal evidence that they invest much in training and development. The employees of these hospital & healthcare companies also said that inputs and support from company are very less in terms of training employees and most employees learn from practical experience and by observation. The labour turnover in these hospital & healthcare companies is huge and even companies tried to train the employees they don’t stay longer. Most employees said that development in these hospital & healthcare companies depend on personal relationships with the owners. So lesser the training and development initiatives, lesser the affect on productivity can substantiated in these companies.

Overall the Indian Hospital & Healthcare market has good potential to leverage training and development opportunities to leapfrog to become benchmark companies, they have many success factors present in them to become benchmark companies but they need more consistency to actually realize the productivity benefits. They also need better efforts to convince their employees that they are investing for betterment of employees and after that for organization, which is also their benefit as well.
