The theory and behavior of ferrocement was presented by the author in his book on that subject. That was essentially to introduce and establish the behavior under various load conditions. Naturally, the next step was its use in construction, as a building material. It is obvious that the best structural use will be where the special properties of ferrocement are exploited. The qualities which stand out are; strength in tension and shear and also strength in compression.
These properties along with small thicknesses of cross section point towards the use such a material in getting its various advantages.
From previous research and product experience, it has been proved that ferrocement elements have to be precast before use. For this, proper design of mortar mix was presented in the first book, where casting techniques were also mentioned to get consistent results in the final cast element. This was also to get the best product quality. This helped in ensuring quality control and quality assurance of the structural element. It is important to note that American Concrete Institute committees could not assign any stress values to handmade ferrocement products.
Two systems have been presented in which ferrocast elements are used along with other structural materials to form composite structural elements. The two systems are:
1. Composites with Light Gauge Steel.
2. Composites with a mix of ferrocement with reinforced concrete.
