Renewable energy today only accounts for a small fraction of the primary energy used by the world. Cost and the intermittent nature of most of these sources has been the main obstacle to increasing the use of renewable energy. This book reviews the current status of wind, solar, biomass, hydroelectric, wave, tidal and geothermal energy sources, including estimates of the available supply of each and current prices. Because existing solar photovoltaic cells can now provide energy at prices close to that of other sources, it can be expected that solar energy will see a rapid increase in use parallel to the increase in wind energy over the past decade. The authors take a multidisciplinary approach and share their observations on trending technologies (including neuroscience, artificial intelligence, virtual reality (VR), nanotechnology, and genetic engineering) that they predict will significantly impact the next 25 years. Attributing the major problems in the world to overconsumption and overpopulation, they outline solutions that depend on global and local policies and work to reduce consumption, population growth, renewable house gas emissions, environmental pollution, and military expenditures.
