Gender inequality and empowerment of women has been one of the most talked topics not only in the country but internationally also. Gender equality forms the basis of a just society and when society starts believing in gender equality it results in gender justice and bring empowerment to weaker section which is ‘women’.

Thus, we may note that gender inequality, gender justice and women empowerment cannot be taken in isolation. They are somehow interconnected to each other.

Another aspect is human rights violation of women. This is another face which cannot be ignored while talking about women empowerment. India is a country which has a history of different phases, from the civilization of Aryans, invasion by foreign powers it went through many phases so does women of this country. With different cultures, religions, practices it becomes sometimes difficult to identify the problem from the scratch.

This book has made an attempt to identify the problem with low status of women in country by tracing the history and developments in the country during different time periods.

Gender discrimination is not something which suddenly appears. It starts form the birth of a girl till her death. She is a victim of poor child care, devoid of education, dependent, victim of malnutrition, physical, emotional, and economic violence and a victim of dowry death. other socio-cultural factors make her position more vulnerable.

During recent years efforts has been made to improve the condition of women. Many international instruments are implemented. Most of the countries have ratified these instruments.

With UDHR giving education a status of Basic Human Right, a journey for empowerment of women begins. India also by the 86th Constitutional Amendment is now giving free and compulsory education to children. it paves new rights for those girls who could not get education due to economic restrictions in family. Poverty has always been a factor which restricted many girls and women from their right to education.

Along with it many other social legislations, industrial laws has been passed by various governments time to time. Still, a clear difference can be marked as gender inequality in India. Thus, this book focuses on various dimensions which are causes for inequalities for women’s rights. This work has tried to cover major policies, judicial approaches, various theories, data, international instruments and legislations which can and had improved the status and condition of women.
